The Frank Hilton Organisation yesterday raised $100,000 in the annual Amazing Wheelbarrow Race in support of children with disabilities.

Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa took part in the charity event.

17 teams took part in the competition including: Bluescope Lysaght, Vinod Patel, Fiji Water and Fiji Roads Authority.

FHO chief executive Sureni Parera said the Amazing Wheelbarrow race was a fundraising event to continue providing services for the schools.

“Fundraisers such as this assist us to keep our doors open and continue to offer much needed services to children with disabilities,” Ms Perera said.

The funds raised yesterday topped the inaugural event last year of $85,000.

Ms Parera said funds for the race were still coming in.

She said they were a charitable organisation that provided services to over 250 children.

Ms Perera said Hilton Schools were the only special schools in the country with a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who provide a holistic development approach.

She said the Hilton audiology was the only facility that could detect hearing loss in infants soon after birth and provided an outreach programme to the Colonial War Memorial hospital in Suva.

Ms Vuniwaqa said Fiji was on the verge of ratifying the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

She said the rights of children with disabilities were enshrined in the Convention which articulated the need for early detection and early intervention which were provided by the organisation.

Amazing Wheelbarrow Race winners Bluescope Lysaght team captain Kevueli Senibiau said the team was happy to retain the title from last year.

“We are happy for retaining our title this year and we dedicate this win to the children,” he said.
